Prompt: TIME: The first time grad student Rei sees his marine biology professor's latest discovery/experiment
PLACE: The "unused" underground laboratory that has 3 levels of security to gain entrance
Note: Tried a 20-min free write this time! I'm not sure it was better... I'd kinda thought I would write more than that but oh well dfghj. I would definitely like to develop this plot tho (into something more then wo w Haru pretty fghjk). This was a prompt I wrote for SportsFest that never got filled :,c I think a mermaid!Haru/scientist!Rei fic would be so cute too...
Rei’s heart drummed in anticipation as he followed his professor’s retreating back down another dimly lit hallway. He had been shocked when the man had pulled him aside the other day, locked the door behind them, and told Rei he wanted to share his latest discovery with him. He’d made Rei swear to keep it a secret, and even given him 3 different contracts to sign to assure he wouldn’t take anything he saw outside of the lab. Not that it was necessary. Rei would never betray the man’s trust, but he didn’t blame his caution.
As they passed through another badge-scanner locked door, Rei could feel his palms start to swear. What was this? Excitement? Nervousness? Maybe even a bit of fear? He was about to enter the world of cutting edge marine biology, and no matter what Nagisa said, it was so as exciting as space and-and… whatever it was Nagisa insisted was more exciting than “staring at fish all day” as he summed up Rei’s studies. Whatever sort of creature that laid at the end of this trek down into the depths of the facility must be incredibly exciting, and Rei was anxious to see it.
“Now,” his professor said, startling Rei as he turned and spoke for the first time in the past 10 minutes. “You’ll want to be very careful. He isn’t very fond of sudden movements.”
Rei nodded, the word ‘he’ turning in his mind. His professor didn’t often refer to animals as such.
His professor held his eye for a long moment as if looking for any reason to turn back and refuse Rei entry. Finally, he returned his nod and pushed the door open.
At first, all Rei saw was a large tank in the center of the room. The main lights were off, but the room was bathed in gentle, rolling blye as lighting from within the tank reflected outward.
When Rei finally caught a look at what he was supposed to see, his breath caught in his throat. His first thought was: “he’s beautiful.” His second: “this can’t be real.”
Laying almost lazily at the bottom of the tank was a man… or rather, what looked like a man until one traced their eyes down his pale body and found bright, iridescent blue scales. It was a mermaid. A merman? A mer...something. Rei met the creature’s brilliant blue eyes and stared at him with wonder. The creature stared back, looking vaguely annoyed.
“Isn’t he beautiful?” Rei’s professor asked, making Rei jump again.
He could only nod back dumbly. There were no words for what he saw. Rei often found fish beautiful, even when others would disagree, but none of them, not a single one, could compare to this. The light from within the tank danced along the creature’s tail, sparkling back in a dizzying array of colors. His tail moved in lazy, graceful movements, not particularly with any visible purpose.
