Challenge #9

In your own space, list your Fandom Wrap categories.

Okay to start off, I just want to say this is such a cool and fun prompt. I always love those year-in-review things haha.

What are your top five fandoms for 2021 based on the amount of time you interacted with them?
1. Genshin Impact (56 hours on r/GenshinImpact; 30 fics totaling 500k+ words read on Ao3; and several pieces of fanart)
2. Merlin (19 fics totaling 600k+ words read on Ao3)
3. Harry Potter (9 fics totaling 177k+ words read on Ao3 and lots of time in r/HPSlashFic and r/HPfanfiction)
4. Fire Emblem (7 fics totalling 22k+ words read on Ao3, SO much time in r/firemblem, r/FireEmblemHeroes, and r/shitpostemblem)
5. Supernatural (8 fics totaling 166k+ words read on Ao3)

Genshin Impact was the clear winner here. I only started playing it in June, but it quickly took over as The Thing Everything I Do Revolves Around. The rest were a bit more up in the air, but I had compiled some Ao3 stats at the start of the year, so I used those. Although I read a lot more SPN than Fire Emblem, I'm just not involved with the fandom at all outside of reading, so I decided to put FE higher.

What are your top five fandom spaces in terms of time spent? (AO3, Twitter, Tumblr, Reddit, Dreamwidth, and others)
1. Ao3
2. Reddit
3. Discord
4. Tumblr
5. Twitter

Ao3's the big one. A bulk of my fandom interaction is through reading fic, so that's gotta be #1. Tumblr's fairly low since as much as I'm on it, I've just been too lazy to update my following list. My dashboard is just a lot quieter than it used to be, and it's mostly just memes and my mutual's fandoms, not mine haha. My activity on Twitter is 90% retweeting stuff that I saw on Reddit lol I don't really use it on its own.

What are the top five ways you interacted in these fandoms? (Reading fanfic, writing, commenting, watching videos, chatting with friends, making art, or anything else you can think of).
1. Reading fic
2. Sharing/Reblogging/Retweeting fanart
3. Posting screenshots
4. Making art
5. Daydreaming

What things did you create that took the most time?
1. I planned and started this huge Genshin cross stitch project based on a series of artworks I really liked. They're meant to be gifts, but a couple thousand stitches in, I kind of realized the time and energy commitment was just too much. I'm extra not feeling it now especially because I used the same designs in the christmas presents I gave my friends... We'll see lol

2. Drawing all the Genshin characters from memory

3. My Ao3 Year in Review, a spreadsheet compiling all the fics I read in 2021 along with their word counts and tags so I could see what my top fandoms and tags were (sorry I'm not sharing that one though haha)

4. I set up bots in my Genshin discord channel to post what you can farm each day

5. Art for the Kazuha Big Bang

Challenge #8

In your own space, celebrate a personal win from the past year: it can be a list of fanworks you're especially proud of, a gift of your time to the community, a quality or skill you cultivated in yourself, something you generally feel went well.

One day last year, I got the idea to draw every playable Genshin character from memory. And somehow, surprisingly... I did it????

And then I thought: Okay... but what if I then went back and redrew all of them but with references? And somehow I did that too!

It was just a really fun project, and a lot bigger than something I'd usually attempt. So, I was really proud that I saw it through to the end :)

Challenge #7

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources, spaces, or communities you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!)

  • The subreddit r/GenshinGays and particularly its official Discord has been one of my favorite places for Genshin Impact info, fanworks, and such. The majority of Genshin fanworks and discussion in most places tends to revolve around waifus (aka the female characters with a big focus on how attractive they are), so it's really nice to have a community focused on the male characters. The discord is especially great because they have a dedicated leaks channel where they share leaks for upcoming updates from reputable sources. It's highly curated so you don't get a lot of wild speculation. They also have a co-op challenge where you can ask for help fighting tough bosses and such, which has been a lifesaver haha

  • Another subreddit I love is r/otomegames. That one's focused on what are basically dating visual novels where the main character is a girl and all the love interests are guys. They post memes, sales, play-alongs, and all kinds of stuff. I've only played a tiny fraction of the games they talk about, but the energy in that subreddit is just so positive and fun.

  • Rounding off my list with another subreddit because I seem to spend all my non-gaming time on reddit nowadays lol is r/HPSlashFic. Actually wait, let me rec both this one and the main subreddit, r/FanFiction, because both are really welcoming fanfiction communities with strict rules and moderation that ensure it doesn't devolve into a bash-fest. r/HPSlashFic is mostly centered around fanfic recs, and I've found a lot of really interesting things to read through it. r/FanFiction is mostly writer-focused and is a multi-fandom space where writers will talk about their struggles while writing and posting fic, celebrate any milestones they reach, and things like that.

In your own space, Create something.

There's been this drawing challenge floating around the Genshin subreddit, and yesterday, I finally got around to doing it!

Challenge #5

In your own space, talk about an idea you wish you had the time / talent / energy to do.

Oh jeez this list could honestly be endless. I guess the latest on my mind has been fanfic. I have a few ideas that've been bouncing around my head, but the talent and energy requirements seem far too high for me haha. I'm always kind of scared of writing fic though. Part of it is my high expectations. Especially since I'd really only be writing for myself, it's frustrating that I can't really write in a way I enjoy reading... at least sometimes. Sometimes I'm really amused by my own works lol but I think that's just a by product of me finding myself really funny lmaoooo. I like serious, well developed stories though, and those are a struggle for me to write. The other part of it is just the cringe. I just.... can't get over the inner cringe. Especially because I wish I could write more serious fic, being serious about it is even more embarrassing. I honestly have the utmost respect for fic writers, even those who are still learning and maybe not putting out the most impressive works... but I find it really, really hard to hope for or allow myself that same kindness.

As for what I'd like to write, I really am such a sucker for the completely off the wall random stuff that has such a narrow appeal. Those crack pairings taken seriously. Those crossovers born of nothing more than really loving two completely unrelated series at the same time. There's other people out there who share my interests, and I know it because I've stumbled upon their works occasionally and they're like saviors to me. I want to do that. I want to write the random fic that will pop in someone's head one day, and they'll wonder "I wonder if anyone has actually done this?" and someone has!!! Me! Or someone's just browsing randomly and stumbles upon my work and thinks "I never would've thought of this but it works????" Anyway that's my dream I've been far too cowardly to approach. Maybe one day lol

Challenge #3

In your own space, put some favorite characters into an AU, fuse some favorite canons together, talk about your favorite AU/fusion tropes, or tell us why AU/fusions aren’t your cup of tea.

Oh man, I love AUs so much. I'm pretty sure a solid 80-90% of what I read are AU fics. Like yeah canon is cool and all, but what if everything was different??? It's just so exciting to explore characters in completely different worlds. I have two favorite AUs. One is the very dull and very simple modern/mundane AU lol. Got some medieval characters? Stick 'em in modern times. Fantasy setting? Okay what if there was no magic and also they lived in a modern city? When it comes to novels, contemporary is actually my favorite genre, so it fits that I'm a sucker for it in fanfiction as well. (Which reminds me of a funny/cringey story of when my uncle asked me what my favorite genre was and I said "realistic fiction." He apparently heard "fanfiction" and started talking about how fanfic wasn't that bad and how he had read some really good ones... I couldn't even respond because I was too busy wanting to die at the thought that someone thought I would really say fanfiction is my favorite book genre,,,,, like,,,,,, I lov fic but no???? God I'm still cringing.)

...anyway, back to modern/mundane AUs, I feel like they also tend to give way to a more character-driven story for characters from a really plot-driven canon. I mean, you can do the same in more fantastical or historical settings, but those generally come with a fair bit of worldbuilding to really establish the setting. I do love worldbuilding, but I really am a sucker for laser-focusing on characters.

Speaking of worldbuilding, that's one of my favorite things about my second favorite AU. This one is admittedly very controversial, and I fully understand why a lot of people wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole.... but man I really, really love A/B/O aka omegaverse. It's just..... such a diverse AU. Even though it's an "established" thing, the rules can change so wildly depending on the author, and it's really cool seeing how everyone interprets it differently. It's also like... a really... I don't want to say disconnected? But it's like an exploration of gender without being too real. Some people prefer real world issues to be presented in a realistic way, but as much as I love realistic fiction, I also really want that sense of escapism. People also really take issue with the themes of dubcon/noncon in omegaverse, but I find it gives the opportunity to really push consent in a non-preachy way. I'm.. terrible with words rn lol but like you know how hurt & comfort makes the comfort feel that much more satisfying because of the hurt? Putting a couple in a setting where dubcon is basically standard, excused, and even expected at times.... and then still having them really prioritize making sure the other person really wants this, and that they'll be safe and happy and all that like... they're not just doing that because of societal obligations or whatever. They genuinely care about the other person, and this is one their own personal morals they fully believe in. Like it just. Gets to me. I really love it haha

Finally, with the whole scenting thing, there's a form of comfort that's neither verbal nor physical, which really appeals to me. I don't like touching people, and I'm not the best at communicating, so the idea of just.... putting out vibes and the other person just gets it? Someone putting out vibes that make you feel safe? loved? happy? I love it lots.

Challenge #2

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

Initially, I wasn't going to do any "goals" a la New Years Resolutions... but I wasn't feeling super motivated around the 1st. I've since picked up bullet journaling again and feel a bit more likely to be productive, so why not?

First, I'd like to revisit some of my goals from last year, and see how I did.

- I got maybe halfway through the RFA Challenge before giving up. Exercise goals have always been really difficult for me to stick to, especially since I struggle to see the point in them.

- I don't even remember what happened with the doodle challenge lmao Towards the later half of the year, though, I did start drawing more again, though!

- As for my Japanese learning, I'm pretty proud of my progress. I managed to finish Genki II, took a conversational Japanese class, and read the first volume of the manga Yotsubato in Japanese! I took a long, several month break, and am now getting back into it. But I'll talk about that more in this year's goals.

- I read 6 books this year, and got 3/4 of the way through a 7th before I decided to drop it. Unfortunately, most of those were books I picked up recently, so I didn't really make a dent in my to-read pile lol

- I finished Link's Awakening and made zero progress in finishing Fire Emblem Three Houses haha oops

- Finally, I did take part in a fandom fest! There was a Kazuha Big Bang that I did art for :) Go me

Alright, enough reminiscing, onto the future!
  • More Japanese learning progress? More Japanese learning progress. I'd like to go ahead and try my first Visual Novel in Japanese. I still have... a bunch of manga I bought, and I got my hands on the first Harry Potter novel, so those'll be interesting to tackle! We'll just kind of see where my whims take me I suppose lol

  • Another reading goal? You bet! I think I would seriously like to do something about my to read pile this year... either by actually reading them or just giving them away. StoryGraph has a bunch of reading challenges, so I think I'll try to find one that works for me.

  • Finally, my video game backlog. In particular, I have a bunch of visual novels I've picked up during sales that I haven't even started (never mind the ones still leftover from the BLM itch.io bundle... oof). I want to keep buying and playing new games that come out, especially so I can get more involved with communities that play them! But I'd feel better about buying new games if I didn't have so many unplayed.

I think I'll just play the rest of the year by ear... take opportunities as they come and set more short-term goals as I see myself able to achieve them. Who knows how fandom will play out. We'll just have to see!

Challenge #6

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

First up, this super cute Agressive Retsuko fanart! I just really love what the artist did with lighting and texture in this drawing, and it's just... so adorable ;o;

Next up is a collection of screenshots and quotes from books, movies, and songs with the theme of swimming and being gay. It never fails to make me feel things.

Finally, a Harry Potter fic that kept me up til 5 in the morning the other day in which Harry switches places with an alternate version of himself into a world where his parents are alive. I thought this was a super interesting exploration of the idea, and found myself considering all the ways things could continue after the point the fic leaves off on.

  • In Another Place - whats up with jeremiah

He had done it. This time, he had done it. His uncle had gone too far, and Harry had to pay the price for it. As he lay dying on the floor of his Number 4, Privet Drive bedroom, what unexpected force will save Harry?

Challenge #5

In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love.

How about a few things I saw in the last year or so that I'd highly recommend?

The Gifted is a Thai series about students with special powers and an unjust school. The story, the characters, and the production quality is just... really amazing, especially considering this is a show that's free to watch on the production company's Youtube. Actually, GMMTV does quite a few good shows, but this one's by far my favorite. Seriously though, it's only 13 episodes, and the whole show had me at the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next and just what the school administration was hiding. The first few episodes are extra cool because they focus on each character and their powers, and it's almost like each episode follows a different genre perfectly suiting the character it's focused on!

Okay I'm like a couple decades late on this one, but if you haven't seen Natsume Yuujinchou, you absolutely should. It's about a guy who can see supernatural spirits/monsters. His grandmother had collected a book of spirits names, which gives the holder power over them, and Natsume is trying to return these spirits' names to them. More than that, though, it's about the relationships and connections between people. It's just a really soft, wholesome anime.

Fire Emblem is a strategic rpg series in which you control an army on a gridded map with turn-based combat. In Three Houses, you play as Byleth, a mercenary turned professor. This game is somewhat like if a visual novel and chess decided to have a baby. Instead of chess pieces, you get a cast a lovable characters whose relationships with each other and Byleth grow as they fight together, unlocking conversations between the characters. You can play as either male or female Byleth, and the "bi" in Byleth isn't just for show. They each have a number of options for same-gender relationships. There's a lot of replayability in that the house you choose not only decides which characters you interact with, but also the the events that occur later in the game. It's a really good game, and I highly recommend it.

Challenge #4

In your own space, create some goals.

Hmm I actually have quite a few going at the moment!
  • Ring Fit Adventure January Kickstart - basically, I'm following an exercise schedule for the month using the switch game, RFA. I'm actually a few days behind, but I'm hoping to stick to it! Exercise isn't exactly my forte, but I'm also not entire opposed to it? So there's that.

  • 30 Day Doodle Challenge - So there's this artist/bookbinding youtuber, Sea Lemon, who has like these doodle challenges! They were actually posted several years ago, but I haven't really been drawing lately and wanna get back into it. The fact that it's a "doodle" challenge has made it easier for me to participate even on days when I don't have a lot of mental energy. Like oh, today's prompt is dots? Fuck it, I'm just drawing polka dots. Boom! Day 5 DONE!

  • Every year I say to myself "I'm going to get back into learning Japanese" ...

For some smaller, not yet in progress goals, I'd definitely like to read more. I know I have so many books on my shelf I won't even like... just taking up space and weighing on my mental "to do" list... but I've gotta actually crack them open and read a bit before I know which ones they are. I need to beat Link's Awakening so I can send it back to the friend who lent it to me, and finish the remaining routes in Fire Emblem Three Houses (while trying not to just play Blue Lions again.........).

I'd like to take better care of myself and spent less money on food at work (I work at a bookstore cafe for gods sake! If I'm spending that much money I should at least have more unread books on my shelf smh). They really get you with that 40% off, tricking you into thinking a daily $3 latte is any better than a $5 latte like... no you're still just buying an unnecessary and expensive drink... worse when you buy more than one throughout your shift aaaa

I think a fandom goal for me would be to participate in a fandom fest this year maybe??

Challenge #3: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? What would you talk about? What are you dying to know?

Th first person to pop into my head when I really thought about it was Yuuri Katsuki from Yuri!!! on Ice. I don't particularly have anything I'd want to ask or talk about, but he just seems so sweet and so chill. When I thought about who I'd really want to actually be around, it had to be him. ...Oh my god or Merlin from the BBC show? He is also just super nice, and they both have such awkward energies that I feel I would 100% vibe with.

Pimp Your Favorite Communities, Fests or Challenges!

uH,, hmm... I haven't really been involved in any! Snowflake Challenge is definitely a favorite of mine, but between the trouble of finding comms, fests, and challenges along with the commitment of keeping up with them, I just really haven't had the time or energy lately :,o I'll definitely see what others have to recommend tho!

On second thought, I'll at least mention a few community type things I've really liked recently:

r/bujo on reddit has been super neat! I've recently gotten into bullet journaling as a way to help me remember to do stuff and up my productivity. This subreddit has a lot of posts and pics of people actually putting their bullet journals to use, and it's helped me find ideas for things I can reasonably do with mine (as opposed to r/bulletjournal which is full of beautiful pictures of things I know I'll never find the energy to do haha)

...I said "some" but I literally can't think of anything else ;;

In your own space, set some goals for the coming year. They can be fannish or not, public or private.

Gosh... I did a few resolutions on New Year's, but I think some have already... shifted if not changed. Previously, I set a modest goal of writing 100 words a week because I really want to start writing this year (I used to, but I stopped as I got more confident with my drawing and far less confident with my writing...). Then, I joined GetYourWordsOut, so I guess I'm committed to a far bit more than that... as in 400 words a day more... Nevertheless, I'll stick to it!

I've got a really important lesson to learn, and that is: it's okay to write badly! I always tell people what makes a good artist isn't talent. It's the passion to persevere enough to become good, and I think I really need to apply that to writing. If I want to become a good writer, I need to write... so, I will!!

As for specific goals... hmm. I think I'd like to finish a WIP... my second goal is to write a single 5k story... as a stretch goal: 10k! It's kinda funny how as a reader, I look at anything under 50k as a short fic, but as a writer, I struggle to hit 500 words & marvel at anything over 1k fghjkl;

Do you have any tricks up your sleeve to pull out when a fanwork isn’t cooperating? What is your level of planning to pantsing/winging it?

God, it's so weird. Harry Potter was like my original fandom and the one I always go back to the most, but I like never draw for it???? So, have a tragic Harry sdfghjk. Fun fact: I looked at my watercolor sketchbook for all of 2 seconds before deciding nah I'll just use my regular sketchbook. It can handle it dfghjk Why are nice paper & empty sketchbooks so intimidating ;;

A fannish wishlist huh? Hmm...
  1. Fic Recs: Best fics for people who've never seen the source material! So all your greatest fics that would be enjoyable to someone who knows nothing of the canon! (Preferably m/m or gen)
  2. Wolfstar art recs... I love Remus/Sirius but I haven't actually seen a lot of art for them!
  3. This one's more indulgent, but no worries if you can't grant it: A comment on one of my fics would be nice ;u; I've written for Free!, Yuri on Ice, Homestuck, and in one case Off (mortis ghost) >.>;;

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them.

When I initially saw the call for mods for the Snowflake Challenge, I thought: "Wow, that seems like a cool challenge! I definitely want to take part, but I don't think I'll be a mod." By the second post, desperate for comment mods, I thought "All I have to do is comment? Well... that seems reasonable? Plus I'd love to contribute to supporting interaction between users!" And so I did! And as overwhelming as it's been at times, I'm really happy I became a comment mod! I've reached out and interacted with so many people I otherwise might not have. I made a few friends, expanded my circle, and made my reading page a little busier~ It's definitely been cool to reach out to people, especially when they reach back~
