Prompt 3: Canon Recommendations'
*rubs fannish hands together* So you're considering new canons, eh? Well I've got just the rec post for you and you're looking right at it! BEHOLD!
Free! Anime (3 Seasons, 3 movies. First Season - 12 eps)
- There was absolutely no way I wasn't going to start with this dfghj SO! What is Free! ? It's an anime about competitive high school swimmers! If you like beautiful boys having Emotions, struggling with their futures, and learning to appreciate their relationships with others, this may be for you!
Why I like Free!
There's a really big focus on the characters and their relationships with each other, which is always a huge plus for me! I find almost all the characters really lovable, and I love watching my favs develop and improve over the course of the show. The length of the show is also a huge plus for me. 12 episodes? That's like 5 hours! You could sit down and binge the entire first season in one sitting. Cliff hangers? I don't know her. If you wanted to stop at s1 you absolutely could (unless you get hooked like me and end up forcing yourself through the less than great parts of later seasons because you need the new content). Also, it's just... really pretty. Thank you so much KyoAni
Fire Emblem Video Game (Nintendo, Like... 15 games? But they're all stand-alone)
- Fire Emblem is a Japanese strategy RPG series with turn-based combat. How would YOU like to control an entire army by strategically moving, attacking, and using items? All with beautiful anime graphics, cool attack animations, and a developing story about resolving a war.
Where should you start?
I highly recommend Fire Emblem: Awakening for the 3DS! It was a lot of people's starter game and what made them fall in love with the series (me included). It is the first game in the series to introduce "Casual Mode", in which units who die during battle will revive after the battle, which is great for players who really don't find a lot of joy in playing games after their fav has died or restarting constantly just to win one stupidly difficult battle only to lose a unit because some asshole enemy decided they were going to land a critical hit.
Why I like Fire Emblem
It's got everything... lovely art styles, fantasy kingdom settings, gods who are dragons and also evil, the ability to raise your relationships with other units by fighting near them and unlocking conversations that develop the characters and their relationships with each other. The strategy element is also a lot of fun. All the battles are done in turns where during the player phase, you get to move all your units, attack, use items, whatever, and then in the enemy phase, the opposition does the same. You have to be really careful about where you leave your units, or they might end up getting attacked multiple times and killed during the enemy phase.
There's a few more scattered fandoms I enjoy, but these two are like? My top two and I am forever eager to have others join me in enthusing about them ;u;

Date: Jul. 25th, 2019 06:15 am (UTC)By season 3 the original director left to work on other projects, so you could definitely feel a change in the show. They focused a lot on newer characters and the original characters felt really ooc... they also retconned earlier events and kept harping on an issue that had been solved way back in season one.
I think season 2 still has some really good moments (and the entirety of episode 12 is such a treasure), but imo the 3rd season is missing a lot of what makes Free!... Free! It probably doesn't help that Free! isn't based on a manga. It was inspired by a light novel, but it's an original story set in the same universe.
